Georgia LPN Licensing Requirements
The first thing that a practical nursing student must do after completing his/her practical nursing certificate or diploma program is to apply for an LPN licensure. The license can be obtained either by examination or endorsement.
Licensure by Examination
Applicants can apply for the practical nursing licensure by examination in the state if they are graduated from a nursing program approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing.

The online application service is operated by the Georgia Secretary of State P. Kemp. The applicants have to register in order to access the various online services.
Here is the complete process for applying for a practical nursing licensure by examination-
- Applicants must have passed a nursing program approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing.
- In order to apply online, the applicant needs to register on the online portal with his/her name, social security number, and PIN. After registering, the applicant is supposed to log into the portal and fill the application completely.
- Those applying through paper application will have to fill the basic information, like name, contact details, and graduation details. They would need to attach a check or money order of $40, payable to the Georgia Nursing Board. Other documents that need to be submitted are – an official transcript from the nursing program and documents of disability (if applicable).
- A completed criminal background check is required.
- Before applying for the practical nursing licensure, applicants need to register for the NCLEX-PN examination online with Pearson Vue. It is the online registration portal for National Council Licensure Examination. Make sure to use the same details in order to apply for licensure and register with Pearson Vue.
- Applicants also need to register with COGENT, an online fingerprint processing service, before applying for the practical nursing licensure.
- Graduates, who have completed their practical nursing education from a nursing school outside the state of Georgia, are required to apply for the licensure by a paper application. Make sure to submit the application fee of $40, official college transcripts, and criminal background check documents.
- Graduates, who wish to apply for a practical nursing licensure in Georgia and have completed a non-traditional nursing education program, are required to apply for the licensure only by submitting a paper application.
Once you pass the exam for practical nursing and gain the licensure from the state board, your name will be included in the Georgia Nurse Aide Registry.
Licensure by Endorsement
Nurses, who are currently having an active LPN licensure and working as a practical nurse in another state, but want to shift in the state of Georgia, are needed to apply for a practical nursing licensure by endorsement. It is required to register through a paper application in order to apply for a licensure by endorsement.
- Carefully fill the application form providing all the necessary details. Also, sign it properly.
- Submit the details of your nursing education and the type of degree awarded.
- Active practice information, including the documents depicting the details of your current employer.
- A non-refundable licensure by endorsement application fee of $75, payable to the Georgia Board of Nursing.
- Verification of your practical nursing licensure from your original state.
- Request your practical nursing program to send the official transcript.
- Graduates from a practical nursing program outside the United States of America are required to provide a professional report from Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) Credentials Evaluation Service (CES) sent directly to the Georgia Board of Nursing.
- Students, graduated from a non-traditional nursing education program, also have to meet the specific educational requirements.
- Applicants, who want to apply for the practical nursing licensure in the state of Georgia by endorsement, also need to submit one of the following documents-
- Documents regarding graduation from a nursing program within four years of the date of application.
- Documents regarding completion of 500 hours of practice as an LPN within the four years of the date of application.
