How to Become a CNA in Texas: Certification Requirements
Earning a spot on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry follows a straightforward path: complete training, prove your skills via exam, and maintain employment. Texas enforces specific standards, but the process is designed to move quickly for candidates who meet the prerequisites.
Step 1: Finish a State-Approved Training Program
To qualify for the exam, you must graduate from a program approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). The minimum is 100 total hours, 60 classroom hours covering basic nursing concepts, infection control, and communication, plus 40 hours of hands-on clinical practice in a long-term care facility. Many community colleges, vocational schools, and healthcare employers offer these courses. Before enrollment, expect a tuberculosis (TB) test and a fingerprint-based criminal background check. Both are hard prerequisites: no program worth your time will let you start without them, because registry eligibility hinges on a clean background.
Step 2: Pass the Competency Evaluation
Once training is complete, you register for the state exam through Prometric, the testing vendor. The evaluation has two parts: a knowledge test (70 multiple-choice questions) and a skills demonstration where you perform five randomly selected nursing tasks. A Spanish-language oral version is available as an alternative to the written test. Skills commonly tested include handwashing, measuring vital signs, catheter care, and safe transfer techniques. The combined fee is $125 for the written-and-skills option, or $135 if you choose the oral version. You have three attempts per part, and both parts must be passed within 24 months of completing training. If you fail a part on the first try, you can retake that portion while your passed part remains valid.
Step 3: Apply for Placement on the Nurse Aide Registry
After passing both exam components, submit your application to HHSC. The exam results and background check clearance are automatically transmitted, but you must ensure all fees are paid and any additional documents (like training verification) are on file. Once approved, your name appears on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry, making you eligible to work in Medicaid-certified facilities and most other healthcare employers across the state.
Step 4: Maintain Active Status
Registry placement is not permanent without active employment. To keep your listing current, you must work at least one 8-hour shift providing nursing-related services under supervision every 24 months. If you let your status lapse, you may need to complete a new training program or retest.
Reciprocity for Out-of-State CNAs
CNAs certified in other states can apply for Texas endorsement through HHSC. The process typically requires verification of your original training and exam, a new fingerprint-based background check, and possibly a copy of your current out-of-state registry listing. Some candidates may need additional documentation if their previous state's training hours fall below Texas standards.
Disqualifying Criminal Offenses
Texas does not bar every offense, but certain convictions make you ineligible for the registry. HHSC reviews crimes involving violence, abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation of vulnerable adults, as well as some drug-related felonies. If you have a record, contact HHSC before spending money on a training program, a pre-screening can save time and tuition.
